The Opportunity Card is a new German visa open for applications from 1st June 2024. It lets you stay in Germany for up to a year while you search for a job. Unlike a standard Job Seeker visa, you can also work part-time (up to 20 hours a week) with an Opportunity Card.

Documents

  • Valid passport
  • Cover letter and motivation letter
  • Completed online application form (VIDEX)
  • Academic documents
  • Proof of financial resources (€11,208)
  • Proof of accommodation in Germany
  • Insurance Document
  • Police Clearance
  • Any other document required by Case officer
  • There are two options:

  • Full Recognition: Prove your qualifications are fully recognized in Germany (through Anabin database).
  • Partial Recognition: Score at least 6 points based on factors like work experience, age, language skills, and ties to Germany.
  • Benifits:

  • Live and job hunt in Germany for up to a year.
  • Work part-time (up to 20 hours a week).
  • Participate in 2-week job trial periods.
  • Apply for a German work visa if you find a job.
  • There's a €75 visa fee. Moreover, you will need to show proof of €11,208 in funds to cover your living expenses for a year.

According to the points system, you must obtain at least six points to receive the Opportunity Card. The criteria are as follows:

  • Language skills
  • Work experience
  • Age
  • Equivalence of qualification at least bachelor degree
  • The Opportunity Card lasts for one year, but there's good news! You might be eligible for an extension of up to two years if you meet specific criteria. Even if you leave Germany after using the Opportunity Card, you can reapply after a year-long break.

While applications for the Opportunity Card are submitted to the German embassy or consulate, there's plenty you can do now to be prepared:

  • Sharpen Your Language Skills:
  • Gather Your Documents:
  • Boost Your Finances:
  • Gain Relevant Experience:
  • Consider a Health Check:
  • By taking these steps, you'll be well-positioned to submit a strong application for the Opportunity Card when the time comes.

No job contract needed for Opportunity Card! Just German/English skills (A1/B2), a degree or training (2+ years), and enough funds (part-time job proof works). Focus on prepping for your job search in Germany after you get your 12-month permit!

The EU Blue Card and Opportunity Card are two different pathways to work and live in Germany, but cater to different situations:

  • EU Blue Card: For university graduates with a job offer paying at least €58,400 annually.
  • Opportunity Card: For skilled workers without a university degree but with at least two years of vocational training and basic German (A1) or English (B2). This gives you a 1-year permit to find a qualified job in Germany.
  • While processing times can vary, expect to wait several weeks or months for your Opportunity Card application to be reviewed by German authorities. They aim for a swift process, but be patient as they thoroughly check your documents.
